Northwestern University's Center for Connected Learning and Computer-Based Modeling (CCL) is seeking a full-time Scala/Java Software Developer to work on NetLogo, a computational modelling environment widely used in education and research.
The developer will join a small collaborative team in a university research group that also includes professors, postdocs, graduate students and undergraduates, supporting multiple research projects.
A major focus is development of NetLogo itself, an open-source modelling environment for education and scientific research, along with associated projects including multi-user simulation and tools for NetLogo-based science curricula for schools.
NetLogo is a programming language and agent-based modelling environment, a dialect of Logo/Lisp specialised for building simulations of natural and social phenomena, with hundreds of thousands of users from grade school students to advanced researchers.
The role involves independently implementing NetLogo features and bug fixes in Scala/Java, and collaborating with the development team and principal investigators on planning and designing features for NetLogo and related projects.
The developer will work with commercial and academic partners on design and functional requirements, interact with the user community on bug reports and questions, and mentor undergraduate student workers and guide Google Summer of Code participants.
They will also contribute to web-based applications including CCL websites and NetLogo Web, handle data collection, organisation and summarisation, and help organise team meetings and maintain team communication.
Applicants need a bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, plus demonstrated experience writing clean, modular, well-tested code, with Scala experience strongly preferred.
