Job Overview
The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection is currently hiring an Inspector on a provisional basis or through the 55a program, a role focused on field enforcement across the five boroughs.
The inspector conducts undercover inspections, takes part in multi-agency enforcement actions, and enforces weights-and-measures laws by testing, sealing, condemning, or confiscating weighing and measuring devices, including petroleum products.
The role also covers investigating trade practices to detect and eliminate consumer deception across every trade and occupation the agency licenses.
Day-to-day work includes completing reports on complaints, violations, and special inspections using tablets, computers, or written documents, plus preparing summonses and testifying at hearings.
The inspector uses agency computer systems for email correspondence, uploading and saving evidence, and researching assignments, and handles administrative duties such as copying and scanning.
The position is physically active, involving lifting weights, walking, using mass transit, and climbing stairs, and requires a valid New York State motor vehicle driver license maintained throughout employment.
Qualifications are a high school diploma plus four years of satisfactory investigations or inspections experience for a consumer or worker protection agency, a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination.
Preferred skills include strong written and oral communication, Microsoft Office proficiency, fluency in an additional language, and comfort driving any city vehicle throughout New York City.
The posting is open to qualified persons with disabilities eligible for the 55-a program, and NYC residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment; to apply, candidates email a resume and cover letter to the listed address with the Job ID number and position name in the subject line.
