# Full Stack Software Engineer Intern | Avandar
New York City (in-person) · Compensation: $7,000/month

### About Avandar
Avandar Labs is an open-source data platform built for the social sector: nonprofits, international organizations, and social enterprises doing the hardest work with the least resources. The tools they rely on are either too expensive, too limited, or both. In 2025 there has been an unprecedented withdrawal of support from the social sector, both financially and politically, leaving resource-constrained teams with half the resources to do 2x the work. And sadly the tech industry is not rising to the occasion. Even companies claiming to be mission-driven still forget that 80% of the social sector is unable to afford their big data or AI solutions that promise increased efficiency. Avandar exists to close that gap: a data management platform that can process data five times faster and 95% cheaper. We've demoed at the Global Digital Health Forum in Nairobi, the ChangeNOW conference in Paris, and have been highlighted by Fast Company. We are newly-launched and are preparing for May to be our first revenue-generating month.
### Why join us
As a Full Stack Software Engineer Intern at Avandar, you'll work directly on a real product used by mission-driven organizations. You'll ship production features, learn modern engineering practices, and speak with nonprofit users to understand their workflows and constraints.
This internship is intentionally mentorship-heavy. You will receive frequent feedback, and your pull requests will be reviewed directly by Avandar's CTO. You'll get hands-on guidance in architecture decisions, code quality, testing, and how to work like an owner.
We're a small team, moving fast, and building in public. That means you'll be given a lot of autonomy while still receiving significant support. This role is for individuals excited to hone their software engineering skills and apply them towards helping an underserved sector.
### About the role
This is a paid, full-time summer internship.
- Duration: 3 months
- Compensation: $7,000/month (depending on experience).
- Location: New York City (in-person required; not remote)
You will contribute across the stack: frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure. You will work closely with the CEO/CTO and collaborate with teammates across product, design, and operations.
A core part of the internship is user contact: you will regularly speak with nonprofit organizations, observe their workflows, and help translate user feedback into product improvements.
### Responsibilities
- Build and ship full-stack product features (frontend + backend)
- Participate in a high-velocity engineering workflow: short cycles, frequent releases, and iteration based on user feedback
- Write clean, maintainable code with strong attention to correctness, readability, and long-term maintainability
- Collaborate on product design and implementation details (tradeoffs, scope, feasibility)
- Conduct basic debugging and performance investigations across the stack
- Write and maintain tests where appropriate, and help improve engineering quality over time
- Document your work so that the team and future contributors can build on it
- Engage directly with nonprofit users: join calls, ask questions, and synthesize feedback into actionable insights
### About you
- You have experience building software in at least one modern stack (through internships, coursework, personal projects, or prior roles)
- You can ramp up quickly and learn new technologies with minimal hand-holding
- You are a self-starter: you can identify what needs doing, propose the next best task, and execute without waiting for work to be handed to you
- You take feedback well and value code reviews as a learning tool
- You communicate clearly, especially when you're blocked, uncertain, or debating tradeoffs
- You're excited about the human element of technology: how tools shape behavior, workflows, power, and outcomes
- You think critically about "tech for good" and understand social impact work as a human and systems problem (not a techno-solutionist narrative)
- You bring humility: you want to help communities do their work more effectively, without pretending to "save the world"
### Compensation
This internship is paid at $7,000/month for a 3-month summer term.
### Location
New York City. In-person required. This is not a remote role.
### How to apply
1. Send your resume to careers@avandarlabs.com.
2. Please include "Full Stack Software Engineer Intern Application" in the subject line.
