Job Overview
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto is recruiting for two postdoctoral fellowship positions centred on electrochemical and thermal upgrading of biomass-derived molecules.
The work sits within an industry-collaborative, interdisciplinary programme developing industrial-scale processes for valorizing lignin-rich biomass.
The successful candidate will design and run bench-scale electrochemical and redox-flow reactors, synthesize and characterize electrocatalysts, and operate high-pressure Parr reactors for thermal catalysis.
Responsibilities also include developing mathematical models for reactor performance and process scale-up, drafting SOPs, and training other researchers.
The role involves reviewing literature, coordinating with academic, government and industry partners, and communicating results through publications and conference presentations.
Applicants need a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related discipline, with specialization in electrochemistry, thermal catalysis or electrochemical engineering.
The appointment is full-time for one year with possible renewal, starts November 15, 2026, and pays a salary of $60,000.
Interested candidates should send a brief statement of research experience (two pages or less), CV with article DOI links, cover letter and at least two references to Celina Tufvegren by the October 30, 2026 closing date.
