Job Overview
MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) runs a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Program supporting exceptional early-career scientists across the department's disciplines.
Fellows pursue independent research, with encouragement to collaborate with at least one EAPS faculty member; the program typically appoints three new fellows each year for two-year appointments.
Each fellow receives an annual stipend of $85,000, plus $5,000 per year for research, $5,000 in relocation expenses, and MIT health benefits.
Named fellowships include the William O. Crosby, Henry G. Houghton, and Mario J. and Luisa T. Molina Fellowships; the Molina supports training of scientists in global change research who are citizens or residents of developing countries or Latin American countries.
Applicants must have obtained a PhD by the start date, but not more than three years before the start date.
Candidates not selected for a named fellowship are automatically considered for open postdoctoral positions in their area of expertise at MIT.
Application materials are a single PDF with a cover letter, CV including publications, and a two-page research plan, plus three reference letters provided separately.
Expected start date is between June 1, 2027 and January 31, 2028; applications are due November 15, 2026 via Academic Jobs Online ID #32935.
