Job Overview

Birmingham City University is appointing a high-calibre graduate as an AI Software Engineer (KTP Associate) for a 24-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership with its Department of Computer Science and PBL Care Limited, co-funded by Innovate UK. Based primarily at PBL Care in Birmingham, the associate will work with leading BCU academics and PBL's operational team to develop and embed an AI-enabled platform transforming how social-care services are planned, coordinated and monitored. The project will build SMARTPBL, an operational-intelligence platform integrating with PBL's existing systems to improve workforce planning, care continuity, regulatory compliance and staff satisfaction. Its three core innovations are an intelligent geospatial carer-matching engine, a workforce retention and attrition-risk predictive model, and a domain-adapted NLP/LLM pipeline converting care notes into structured and auditable intelligence. Main duties include leading requirements elicitation and technical planning, designing the secure modular platform architecture, data layer, APIs, dashboards and user interfaces, and developing the matching, predictive modelling and NLP/LLM capabilities. The associate will also implement cybersecurity, access control and GDPR-aligned data protection, build and integrate the web and mobile solution with PBL's systems and cloud services, and plan and conduct unit, integration, security and user-acceptance testing. Applicants need at least a 2:1 degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering or a closely related discipline, with strong software development, applied machine learning, NLP/LLM, database, API and cloud-platform skills. The role includes a £4,000 personal development budget, the wider KTP Associate training programme, interviews on 9 December 2026, and an Enhanced DBS check with barred-list checks for children and adults. Employment type: fixed-term (24 months). Original company posting: https://jobs.bcu.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=ABCE26062
